CAPE TOWN – It’s back to school for the country’s learners this week and a consumer activist has advised parents to shop smartly, as they prepare their children for the new academic year.

With schools across the country re-opening this week, many parents are doing last minute shopping for essentials such as stationery and clothing.

The South African Consumer Union’s Ina Wilken says some parents often fall into the trap of trying to outdo one another by buying expensive brands, instead of sticking to a tight budget.

Wilken says given the tough economic times, it’s best to be frugal, especially when it comes to school clothes.

“Because when the child has got on a grey pants or a white shirt, all of them look exactly the same, go according to what they can afford. Don’t go for the most expensive because within two or three months your child would have outgrown it. Shop around, look where you can get the cheapest.”
