How to clean your washing machine

15/09/2015 16:14:36

Knowing how to clean your washing machine will ensure you produce fresh clothes you can’t wait to wear. Follow these top cleaning tips to banish bad odours, protect against limescale and kill germs.

Temperature check

If your machine smells it could be because you’re washing at 40°C or less. While this is good for the environment and will help to save money on energy bills, washing at this temperature doesn’t completely eliminate bacteria and mould.

Run it on empty

A product-free service wash could be all your less-than-fresh washing machine needs. Simply spin your machine at a high temperature without anything in it. Your model might have a special drum-cleaning setting – check your instruction manual for more information.

Let some air in

For fresh laundry on every load, carry out your chosen cleaning technique once a month and remember to leave the door and detergent drawer open post wash to allow air to circulate. This will help to prevent mould and bacteria growing, and stop your washing machine from smelling.

How to clean your washing machine with vinegar

You can stop your washing machine from smelling with 2 cups of vinegar, ¼ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of water. Simply mix the baking soda and water together, popping the mixture into the detergent drawer and pouring the vinegar into the drum. Put your washing machine on the hottest setting and select a normal spin cycle. The baking soda and vinegar will naturally break down any mould or mineral deposits.

How to clean your washing machine's rubber door seal

Use a scouring sponge or old toothbrush to clean the washing machine door seal and wipe clean with water. Do the same for your detergent drawer as product can build up in there. If you’re having trouble cleaning your machine door seal, mould may have seeped into the rubber, in which case you should replace the seal.

The final step - check your pipes

If your machine continues to smell you may have a blocked pipe. A drain unblocker should fix the problem, but if you’re unsure the instruction manual will have more on how to clean washing machine pipes.
